Understanding Various Liposuction Techniques

If you’re struggling with weight loss, then you may consider getting liposuction (also known as liposculpture or lipoplasty). This popular plastic surgery procedure removes excess fat from various parts of the body using suction. Common areas include the abdomen, thighs, neck, chin, calves, buttocks and back. During the procedure, the doctor inserts small, blunt-tipped tubes via tiny cuts in the skin and then fat is sucked out through the tubes. Read on to discover some of the various liposuction techniques.

  1. Tumescent Liposuction

A relatively modern technique, tumescent uses a special solution to break fat cells and in turn allow for easier removal and better results. Your doctor will first use a local anesthetic to numb the area (s) of your body where tubes will be inserted. Next, he or she will inject an anesthetic solution comprising lidocaine and epinephrine into the fatty tissue and then perform traditional liposuction.

  1. Single Port Liposuction

This uses a single incision to get rid of unwanted fat from different parts of the body with special cannulas which helps minimize even the smallest scars. Single port liposuction is especially important in individuals who are highly susceptible to poor scar formation ─ like those with darker skin.

  1. Ultrasonic Liposuction

Another liposuction technique is ultrasonic liposuction which employs ultrasonic waves and targets only fat cells, therefore leaving surrounding tissue & blood vessels unharmed. This particular approach may be ideal for areas such as the upper back and muscular male chest which are traditionally much harder to treat.

  1. Super-Wet Liposuction

Super-wet liposuction involves the injection of dilute local anesthesia which is typically less than what is used for the tumescent technique (the volume of fluid is equal to the amount of fat to be removed). General anesthesia is required here with treatment taking anywhere between 1 and 2 hours. The approach may be a good choice for patients who wish to undergo other procedures simultaneously as they are already under general anesthetic.

  1. Laser Liposuction

With this procedure, the power of laser energy is harnessed to emulsify fat cells on contact for easier removal. The laser also coagulates blood within the surrounding vessels to minimize the risk of bleeding. Further, laser liposuction can help boost collagen production, tightening and smoothing your skin’s surface.

  1. Water Jet Assisted Liposuction

Water jet assisted liposuction basically uses a pressurized stream of saline solution to dislodge fat as well as remove the cells. Rather than destroy fat cells like some other techniques, this approach simply loosens the cells in the desired areas to facilitate easier and gentler removal.

  1. Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

This uses a specialized powered cannula which produces tiny, vibrations (approximately 5,000 times a minute) from the tip to loosen fat. It allows surgeons to remove unwanted fat with controlled & precise motions and is much gentler than traditional liposuction. With PAL, more fat can be removed more quickly with less discomfort and less post-operative bruising. It can be ideal for treating difficult areas like the inner thighs and male breasts.

There are different techniques employed in liposuction and it’s best to understand some of them before making a decision.
